Hair dyes fade over time, so you need to recolor your hair, especially if you're in your 40s and gray start to appear. Some people luckily need to do it twice a year, but some people need to do it every two to three months. There are ways to make your hair color last longer so that your hairstyles always look great until your next dye.

1. Wash your hair not too often. Shampooing your hair every day will not only remove the natural oils from your hair, but it will also damage the color of your hair. Keep your hair color fresh by washing it every other day, every three days, or even once a week if your scalp is not naturally oily.

2. Apply special shampoo for colored hair. When you wash your hair, it is important to use the right products. Choose a shampoo designed for colored hair to avoid fade. The formula should be sulfate-free and contain silicone, which helps to keep the color last longer.

3. Use deep conditioners for colored hair. For colored hair, deep conditioning with a conditioner designed specifically for colored hair is critical. Deep conditioner moisturizes and nourishes hair, leaving it soft and shiny. Deep conditioner prevents color fade. Apply conditioner to the base of the hair for better results.

4. Deep condition your hair weekly. Let your hair get deep conditioning. Dyed hair needs daily care. It's also important that you deep condition your hair once a week and then get a hot oil treatment once a month. Doing these will keep your hair soft and moist, relieve stress on your scalp and roots, and keep your mane healthy.

5. Avoid overheating. Once your hair is dyed, use a hair straightener and hairdryer every once in a while to set and rest your hair. As the colored hair is prone to dehydration and breakage. Too much heat exposure can make your hair weak and brittle. If you do need to use a straightener or hairdryer, be sure to apply a heat protector to your hair before heating it.

6. Wear a hat outdoors. Hair dyes fade faster when exposed to the sun, so when the weather gets hot, wear those nice hats whenever possible. Especially in the summer, when you spend most of your time at the beach or outdoors, the sun tends to wear away the color of your hair.

7. Use a leave-in conditioner before swimming. Always protect your hair from chlorine bleaching. Use a conditioner that contains an SPF when swimming to keep your hair color. Spray leave-in conditioner to moisturize before swimming. Wet your hair with water before taking a bath. So it doesn't absorb as much swimming pool and ocean water.
