It's very difficult to get the perfect hairstyle when you're visiting your hairstylist or your hairdresser because you're always having problems or making mistakes when you're giving instructions to the hairstylist or the hairdresser doesn't really understand what you need. Some misunderstandings need to be clarified, and some questions need to be asked before the haircut. So if you don't know what to ask the hairstylist the next time you go to the barbershop, this is the place for you. Here are some simple questions you must ask your stylist before you can get any treatment or haircut.

1. What color will suit me?

You may want to go blonde hair, but if that makes you look as pale as a flu victim, your stylist should tell you. Also, red makes you look flushed. Unfortunately, not every skin tone can produce the color of every hair dye. So when you ask what color suits you, you're really asking what color will make your skin look radiant. A good stylist will know the right color for you and steer you away from hair colorants that make you look washed out.

2. I'd like a new look. Which hairstyle do you think suits me?

Hairstylists can get as bored with your hairstyle as you are by looking at it, especially if you've been looking at the same style for a long time. Discuss the issue in a diplomatic way, explaining that you want a new look and are seeking their advice. Talk to your stylist about what image you want to convey. It always helps to clarify the image.

3. What kind of shampoo and conditioner should I use?

Of course, this question is often answered by the brand name products sold in the salon, but your stylist will point you in the right direction. Whether you’ve got split ends, colored hair, damaged hair, frizzy hair, curly hair, straight hair or anything in between, the shampoo and conditioner you use can make a big difference, so make sure it fits your hair.

4. Does my scalp look healthy?

"Scalp health" is the buzzword of the moment, and for good reason -- if you want a glossy, healthy mane, you need to start with the skin on your head, and your hairstylist has a birds-eye view of any potential problems. Stronger, thicker hair starts with a healthy scalp, so it's important to try to keep the scalp in tip-top condition to avoid any dryness, itching or flaking. If there is a problem, your hairstylist should be able to spot it and recommend specific products to help with the treatment.
